About

Green Mercantile exists to connect people to quality, nutrient-dense local food and the producers and values behind it. Food is the starting point — connection is the goal. We are seeking a contract team member who shares this passion and enjoys building authentic relationships within the community.

This role supports both the ongoing care of the store and the long-term vision of Green Mercantile as a trusted gathering place — intentionally supporting local Canadian farmers, artisans, and makers through thoughtful retail, storytelling, and collaboration.

This is a flexible, relationship-driven role with a low time commitment and high impact.

Key Responsibilities

Store care and merchandising
Tidy, straighten, and thoughtfully reset the retail space. Ensure shelves, coolers, signage, and displays are clean, organized, and inviting. Identify layout or merchandising opportunities that improve flow and experience.

Inventory, pricing, and in-store focus
Review inventory levels and identify low stock, overstock, or slow-moving items. Prepare ordering recommendations or draft orders for approval. Receive and add new inventory upon arrival, including entering products into computer systems, confirming pricing, and ensuring items are properly labeled and shelf-ready. Thoughtfully create and organize in-store specials, promotions, and current happenings as a way to strengthen relationships. Curate a weekly or monthly featured ingredient or product, connecting its story back to the farmers, artisans, or makers behind it.

Marketing and social media support
Work collaboratively with our social media coordinator to capture photos, stories, and short-form video that reflect what’s happening in the store in real time. Share observations and content ideas tied to inventory, displays, collaborations, and events.

Community relationships, collaborations, and events
Build and nurture relationships with local Canadian farmers, artisans, makers, cafés, restaurants, and community organizations whose values align with Green Mercantile. Be present in the local food community in a way that builds familiarity, trust, and genuine connection around Green Mercantile over time. Identify aligned opportunities that allow Green Mercantile to be experienced through shared food, conversation, and collaboration. Thoughtfully assess alignment and bring forward well-considered opportunities. Once approved, carry collaborations and events through from relationship-building to execution with care and minimal supervision, ensuring alignment with Green Mercantile’s goals, values, and long-term vision.

What success looks like in this role

Success is measured by depth and alignment, not volume. A successful person in this role builds genuine, trust-based relationships and helps translate those relationships into thoughtful collaborations, in-store focus, or events that feel natural and values-aligned. The store feels cared for and intentional, stories reflect what’s actually happening in the space, and customers feel more connected to the food, the people behind it, and the broader Green Mercantile vision.

Contract compensation

Monthly retainer, adjusted based on seasonality and scope
Hourly rate for approved additional work beyond the retainer. Additional hours must be discussed and agreed to in advance.
Collaboration bonuses for approved, values-aligned partnerships or events carried through to thoughtful execution
Seasonal scope and retainer level will be discussed in advance and reviewed periodically.

Please send a short note sharing your background, interest, and alignment with Green Mercantile’s vision.
