- The Engineering, Natural Gas Division is seeking a Senior Engineer, Downhole (P.Eng.) to lead the development, maturation, and long‑term stewardship of ATCO’s Abandoned Well Integrity Management Program. This initiative aims to transition a young program into a robust, scalable, and outcomes‑driven integrity framework that improves risk management, regulatory compliance, and fiscal prudency.
- The successful candidate will rely on deep downhole engineering experience to understand the complexities of subsurface remediation, abandonment, and well integrity restoration. This knowledge ensures engineering decisions and execution strategies are prudent, defensible, and aligned with ATCO’s duty of care.
- In addition to developing the Abandoned Well Integrity Management Program, the role will support salt cavern storage wells, wellheads, and downhole integrity assessments, providing subsurface technical expertise for ongoing reliability and lifecycle planning.
Responsibilities
- Abandoned Well Integrity Management Program
- Lead the evolution of the Abandoned Well Integrity Management Program into a mature, structured, and data‑driven program with clear technical standards and governance.
- Apply advanced downhole engineering expertise to interpret well conditions, identify remediation pathways, and set engineering criteria for abandonment and restoration.
- Develop methodologies, risk models, assessment criteria, and decision frameworks for prudent planning and execution.
- Define objectives, performance indicators, lifecycle workflows, and documentation requirements.
- Ensure remediation or abandonment strategies mitigate execution, environmental, and financial risks.
- Establish engineering review processes, field execution planning, contractor oversight, and QC measures.
- Collaborate with internal and external groups to ensure alignment, regulatory compliance, and completion of required AER reporting and regulatory tasks
- Drive continuous improvement, technology evaluation, data structure development, and lessons learned.
- Salt Cavern Program Execution
- Apply downhole engineering principles to salt cavern well integrity, including wellheads, tubulars, casings, cementing systems, and diagnostics.
- Support lifecycle planning for cavern wells including inspections, workovers, remediation, and long‑term integrity planning.
- Complete engineering assessments relating to well integrity issues, anomalies, abandonment justification, and fitness‑for‑service.
- Contribute to standards, specifications, and engineering process improvements for downhole assets.
- Collaborate with Operations and Field Services on safe execution of well servicing and diagnostics.
- Mentor engineers and technical staff in downhole engineering and integrity‑based decision making.

- Working knowledge of key AER directives governing abandoned and leaking wells, including Directive 020 (Well Abandonment), Directive 079 (Surface Development in Proximity to Abandoned Wells), and Directive 087 (Well Integrity Management).
- Familiarity with supporting directives applicable to re‑abandonment and downhole remediation work, such as Directive 013 (Suspension Requirements), Directive 033 (Well Servicing and Completion Operations), and Directive 036 (Drilling Blowout Prevention Requirements).
- Demonstrated proficiency communicating with AER as required by the above regulations.
- Experience with underground storage wells and CSA Z341 compliance is an asset.
- Ability to apply engineering judgment to complex downhole integrity challenges with prudency and risk awareness.
- Strong analytical, communication, documentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
