  • The Western College Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), is the premier centre of veterinary education, research and expertise in Western Canada and a key member of Canada's veterinary, public health and food safety networks. The college's mission is to provide veterinary education in Western Canada and to act as a centre of veterinary expertise and research. The college includes the veterinary medical centre (VMC), a provincial diagnostic laboratory and large-scale research facilities. The WCVM portfolio is unique in its technology, which includes oversight of a proprietary 24/7 legacy system (VetNet) for health and medical data that is shared centrally by all its facilities.

Primary Purpose

  • The Programmer, WCVM IT Solutions, works in a collaborative team to assist in the evolution, maintenance and support for USask’s WCVMs college operations, laboratory, clinic and teaching and learning ecosystems.

Nature of Work

  • This position reports to the College Coordinator, WCVM IT Solutions. Under the direction of the College Coordinator, this position is part of a team of technical staff configuring, enhancing and supporting the WCVM solutions ecosystem. This is an entry level position offering high potential for growth and advancement.
  • With on the job training, guidance and mentorship from senior staff, both functional and technical, the programmer, WCVM IT Solutions will assist in the determination and implementation of appropriate technical solutions that will support service improvement initiatives and/or projects.
  • This position will utilize the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Enterprise Architecture principles when working with clients to determine technical requirements and solutions. Key principles include the value of data as both an asset and a shared resource, minimizing duplication of systems and processes, and integration with, and security of, information systems. As the university’s systems and technical architecture changes, this position must adapt to the changing system and technology landscape.
  • Occasional weekend or evening work may be required, typically scheduled in advance.

  • Accountabilities
  • Ensures the success of colleagues and clients by sharing expertise and knowledge and focusing on customer relationships, assisting in preparing business cases, and reviewing design or configuration designs when requested.
  • Develops and executes test cases, adequately testing software prior to user acceptance testing or sign-off
  • Works effectively with functional staff and end users to capture specifications for system changes and enhancements and support for acceptance testing when required
  • Accurately estimates effort and impact of making software changes and reports task progress and status in an effective and timely manner
  • Where appropriate, customizes and enhances supported systems and interfaces with other systems, and prepares usable technical and user documentation of those changes
  • Provides expertise, advice and support with respect to ICT’s security, reporting, ID management, customization and core services policies and processes
  • Ensures system and data integrity within all supported applications in order to limit the University's exposure to undue risk
  • Understanding of information sources and reports used to support the unit in meeting audit or accreditation requirements and to aid in internal planning and problem-solving
  • Qualifications
  • Education: A diploma, certificate or degree in a related discipline is required. (i.e. computer science, computer systems technology, etc.). We appreciate that non-traditional career paths may have developed a candidate’s competency, and alternate combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience

  • One to three years of experience maintaining enterprise applications or diverse technologies is an asset.
  • Experience in testing, documenting, problem resolution
  • Demonstrated experience with code development and management tools; continuous integration and release management tools
  • Familiarity with the University environment or a hospital setting would be an asset
  • Experience with any of the following will be considered an asset: Windows Server 10 and newer, IIS, Visual Studio, ASP.NET (Web Forms and MVC), HL7, hierarchical databases and relational systems such as InterSystem’s cache/IRIS environment, and GitLab
  • Skills: Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team. Effective interpersonal, communication, and organizational abilities. Superior analytical, programming, and documentation skills. Demonstrated experience in data analysis and system configuration. Proficient with web-based applications and programming tools. Ability to learn new skills quickly.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: a genuine ‘team player’; ability to utilize empathy and compassion towards others and become integral part of a team and while working independently; strong business analysis skills, problem solving and effective communication skills, both written and verbal are all required.
