- LAPORTE is seeking a highly technical Piping Stress Engineer with 3 to 8 years of experience. This position is based in Calgary, AB and focuses on piping design, stress analysis, and support to multidisciplinary engineering projects in biotechnological, pharmaceutical, industrial, and food & beverage industries.
- Our Piping Stress Engineer will be responsible for piping systems design with a focus on stress modeling and calculations, equipment load analysis, and troubleshooting of high-complexity mechanical systems, while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Responsibilities and Duties
- Participate in client needs analysis and project definition.
Participate with the team in the design of building, laboratory, plant and industrial utilities, including
- Piping systems (high-purity, process, utility, CIP/SIP, etc.)
- Piping stress analysis (hydraulic modeling, thermal expansion, supports, restraints)
- HVAC interface (when applicable, no design ownership)
- Plumbing interface (when applicable)
- Boiler, steam & condensate interface (when applicable)
- Building services and mechanical systems related to piping loads
- Prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates related to piping design and stress analysis.
- Evaluate and select equipment, technologies, and suppliers.
- Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary design team.
- Provide construction supervision, conduct on-site and field reviews for assigned projects.
- Support project management requirements.
- Supervise equipment installation, start-up, and qualification when needed.
- Visit project sites for information gathering and project-related activities.
- Perform piping stress analyses per ASME Section VIII, B31.1, B31.3 using commercial tools (e.g. CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, ANSYS).
- Analyze thermal, static, dynamic, vibration, and seismic loads on piping systems.
- Evaluate nozzle loads on rotating and stationary equipment (e.g. pumps, tanks, vessels).
- Prepare detailed stress reports, recommendations, and mitigation strategies.
- Propose routing modifications, support optimizations, and design improvements.
- Review vendor drawings, equipment data sheets, and piping specifications.
- Perform flexibility analysis and check compliance with applicable codes and industry standards.
- Support pipe support design (selection, spacing, spring hangers, snubbers, guides, anchors).
- Key Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
- Membership in a Canadian engineering professional association (EIT or P.Eng).
- 3 to 8 years of experience in piping systems design and piping stress analysis.
- Experience in pharma, biotechnological, industrial, food & beverage, or manufacturing environments (asset).
- Knowledge of relevant codes (ASME, CSA, NFPA, CGA).
- Knowledge of pressure vessels, and process and utility piping design.
- Experience with piping stress software such as CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, ANSYS.
- Ability to travel to client sites across Canada and the USA when required.
- Strong organizational skills and adaptability.
