About

  • One Year Contract: Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineer - Robotic Grasping Systems (RGS)
  • As a Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineer on the Grocery Pick Hardware Team, you will help us create the most advanced robots for our customers. You will work closely with other disciplines (Software, AI, ML, Product, etc.) designing subsystems for complex robotic systems.
  • You will own critical components of new projects in end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) and robotic system design. You will work closely with our Robotics Software and Machine Learning teams to ensure that the designs you create are mechanically sound and empower our advanced AI.
  • This is a one-year contract position, based in our Toronto offices located at Front Street and Blue Jay Way.

What you’ll do

  • Design and build structural and motion assemblies (e.g. End effectors, robot supports, dresspacks)
  • Validate your designs through bench tests, ALT, FEA and production trials
  • Create assembly drawings in SolidWorks and managing bill of materials through our PLM system
  • Develop accurate and concise assembly instructions and SOPs for installation, maintenance, and manufacturing teams
  • Work in a cross-functional team developing technologies to be used in production
  • Perform design reviews, promote and implement development best practices
  • Identify improvements, engineering standards, and procedures and promote best practices to ensure the team produces high-quality products

What you bring

  • 1-2+ years as a mechanical engineer in a related industry
  • Strong ability to iterate quickly and demonstrate new concepts through rapid prototypes of your designs
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals and the ability to approach problems from first principles to justify critical decisions, communicate feedback, and help build consensus within the team
  • Experience modelling and creating part drawings for sheet metal parts, weldments, precision machined components, castings and injection molded components with knowledge of DFMA principles

Experience selecting, sizing and designing for

  • a range of actuator types like BLDCs, steppers, solenoids
  • a range of transmissions like lead-screws, ball-screws, belts and chains
  • pneumatic actuators, valving, seals, gaskets, and air preps
  • a variety of linear and rotary bushings and bearings
  • Proficient in the use and interpretation of both cartesian (traditional) and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) in drawings
  • Proficient in designing with SolidWorks, OnShape or other major packages (3D CAD, 2D drawings) including working knowledge of conducting FEA for a wide range of cases and materials
  • Conduct root cause analyses and mechanical forensic investigation

Bonus Qualifications

  • Applicable skills in at least one of the following areas: end effector design, industrial automation, robotic work cells
  • Pneumatic system experience (e.g. valving and instrumentation)
  • Knowledge of safety systems for industrial machinery (ISO 12100, ISO 10218, or similar standard)
  • Experience with analog electrical equipment (e.g. specifying cables, connectors, panel layouts, NFPA79)
  • Automated test fixture creation
  • Experience with sensor selection, integration, and signal conditioning
  • Understanding to program microcontrollers/processors for limited bench-top testing
