About the role: The Nurse Educator provides leadership, education, and clinical expertise in the support, orientation and competency-based skills development of hospital staff. The Nurse Educator works collaboratively with the interprofessional program team in implementing evidence-based practices to achieve program objectives in the development of clinical pathways or protocols. The Nurse Educator models clinical excellence and all core competencies. They will work to advance professional nursing practice and the practice of other professions as appropriate through leadership, learning and development, integration of research, education, and best practice, critical thinking, inquiry, and analysis. What you’ll be doing: Patient Care Responsibilities Plans, implements, and evaluates evidence-based outcome-oriented changes in clinical practices and care delivery processes. These changes will evolve from the continuous improvement and work redesign initiatives and the restructuring of practice and services. Advocates for the patient and for resources for clinical teams. Co-ordinates, implements, and evaluates content and process of patient teaching programs as they relate to the clinical area. May assist with patient care and will take the full duties of a patient assignment as required. Leadership Responsibilities/Administration Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical pathways and patient care guidelines as it relates to the episodes of care within the clinical area. Develops, implements and evaluates ongoing educational programs for staff and plans appropriate program delivery. Provides leadership, education, and clinical expertise in the orientation, assessment, support, and evaluation of competency based skills of interdisciplinary team members. Works with students and educators from educational institutions to facilitate learning experiences in the clinical area. Supports managers/and directors to review and respond to Safepoint and Incident review report Support the Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) initiatives as a BPSO champion. May participate on an interview panel as required. Education/Research Assesses learning needs of staff and supports them to meet learning goals. Develops, implements and evaluates evidence-based practice activities and educational information for clinical staff. Monitors nursing and health care trends/issues and collaborates to integrate relevant information into education activities and responsibilities. Participates in program quality measurement initiatives and establishes educational strategies in response to issues and trends. Participates with other educators and professional practice leads in development and delivery of clinical educational programs. Supports the development of evidence-based policies and procedures and ensures practice according to policies, procedures and standards of care. Participates in, conducts and integrates research into clinical practice at Southlake Health. Organizational Responsibilities Participates with other educators and professional practice facilitators in the development and delivery of corporate clinical educational programs; Participates in internal as well as external committees, as deemed appropriate by the Director. Collaborates in the sharing of information and education related to clinical practice and trends across the organization with staff, educational institutions and community partners. Participates in the monitoring and achievement of program quality indicators. Performs cross-functional or other duties, as assigned or requested. What you bring: Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario Bachelor’s degree in nursing required Certificate in Adult Education principles or one to two years adult delivering adult training required Best Practice Spotlight Organization Champion designation or willingness to pursue within one month of hire date required Canadian Nurses Association certification (CNA) in related field or willingness to pursue within one year of hire date required ACLS and BCLS required Masters in a healthcare related field preferred Completion of Patient Centered Care course or equivalent preferred ACLS Instructor preferred Current RNAO membership preferred Minimum three - five years recent and relevant clinical nursing experience required; (Insert Unit Specific Appendix) Current/previous experience as a Clinical Nurse Educator in a health care organization preferred Experience in the implementation of Best Practice Guidelines preferred Demonstrated familiarity with College of Nurses (CNO) Standards and Guidelines Relevant experience in providing clinical education using adult education principles and evidence-based practice. Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, communication, team building, facilitation, and coaching skills that encourages positive interactions among all members of the health care team. Strong presentation skills with specific proficiency in PowerPoint and other computer related Skills. Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative practice model with multidisciplinary teams. Experience with clinical program development. Demonstrated understanding of systems and system analysis techniques, value analysis, continuous improvement principles and tools; Experience with simulation technology and simulation-based learning principles. Experience in adult education, mentoring, leadership and coaching; and change management. Experience with the development of policies, procedures, medical directives and delegated controlled acts. Demonstrated strong customer and patient focus philosophy in all interactions. Ability to introduce and effectively facilitate change. Demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and organizational skills. Demonstrated commitment to professional development. Demonstrated proven ability to manage conflict resolution. Experience in leading and/or participating in research-based studies. Active participation and follow up to recommendations from committees. Active participation in facilitating corporate and clinical orientation. Develop, implement, and evaluate education programs that support the vision of the program. Provides leadership and educational support related to emergency codes and alerts. Flexible to meet additional responsibilities as program demands. Regular attendance is a requirement of this position.
