Job Description This role is Hybrid Halifax or Victoria Naval Architect Position Summary Thales Canada is looking for a Naval Architect to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy. The Thales Naval Architect will work with the Thales LCMM & Engineering Team to provide project management and technical support to various Royal Canadian Navy’s Non-Combatant Platforms. This includes but not limited to planning, management and execution of various engineering tasks and other Life Cycle Materiel Management roles. The successful candidate will leverage their existing knowledge of work package management and expertise in structural and marine system design. Key Areas of Responsibility Manage the preparation and updating of marine system technical documentation including manufacturing drawings, design and materiel specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, and test and trials documentation. Conduct technical investigations into problems associated with hull repair and marine equipment and/or system malfunction, including failure and root cause analysis, risk assessments, and solution development. Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software. Performing Life Cycle and Materiel Management functions including but not limited to equipment obsolescence, material compatibility and disposal management. Prepare documented work scopes suitable for solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEM’s, manufacturers, suppliers, repair and testing facilities, or specialist service providers. Prepare technical proposals and cost estimates for Customer approval. Implement and manage engineering changes and engineering work packages. Supporting the development of docking specifications. Development and review of Engineering plans, processes and procedures. Assure compliance with applicable standards including SOLAS, Classification Society, and Naval Ship Code. Conduct detailed naval architecture tasks, including: Requirements analysis; Design calculations; Performance improvement investigations; Weight & moment assessments; and Rolling hull surveys, lightship surveys, and inclining tests. Prepare detailed work scopes suitable for solicitation of proposals and quotation from external resources such as manufacturers, suppliers, repair and testing facilities, or specialist service providers; Development and review of Engineering plans, processes and procedures; Minimum Requirements The candidate must meet each of the following criteria: An Engineering degree or equivalent in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering. Eligible to be registered as a Professional Engineer in Nova Scotia, Ontario, or British Columbia, Canada. 4+ years of demonstrated marine work experience in naval architecture/engineering within the last 10 years. Language: English (Essential) - Strong verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications 5+ years’ experience in project management of ship repair and engineering change projects. Experience with design, testing and certification of shipboard lifting appliances including marine cranes. Familiar with conducting weight and stability calculations and associated tools, and lightship surveys. Experience working within the certification and design regimes of SOLAS/IMO, CSA, Class Society, and DND regulations. Previous experience with Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard; Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets; Physical Demands Predominantly office work but may be required to work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships Maybe required to undertake inspections in machinery spaces of Naval ships involving bending and twisting Special Position Requirements Schedule: 40 hrs/wk, flexible within core business hours Physical Environment: Hybrid Position – mix of working from home, the local Thales office, and at the waterfront onboard DND vessels. Travel: Occasional / infrequent domestic travel may be required to support the vessels.
