- De Beers Group Canada has an opportunity for highly motivated and energetic Mine Hydrologist. Reporting to the Environment Superintendent, the role is based within the Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Training department at the Gahcho Kue Diamond Mine.
- This position will be involved in all aspects of hydrology, interfacing with our water management systems for the mine. The Mine Hydrologist will be instrumental in leading Life-of-Mine and mid-range water management planning for the Gahcho Kue Mine. This role will provide technical leadership on water movement, water balance and water quality across site operations to support various department deliverables and decision making, delivering timely and accurate water-balance outputs and pragmatic recommendations for effluent discharge, operational consumption and tailings deposition scenarios. This role would also be acting as the primary integrator of water accounting datasets, flagging operational conflicts and opportunities across teams, and support regulatory and internal environmental reporting. The Mine Hydrologist will also champion site surface water monitoring, work with field staff, consultants, and environmental laboratories with the objective of ensuring all relevant data is entered into the database and maintained with necessary quality assurance. The ideal candidate is one who has a keen eye for continuous improvement opportunities, can quickly build relationships with key stakeholders, and one who is committed to safe work practices, while striving for zero harm.
Key responsibilities
- Support Life-of-Mine and mid-range water management planning;
- Lead water balance and water quality model development and maintenance;
- Manage and direct water quantity databases;
- Lead water management plan and procedure development and maintenance;
- Lead, with support from the site Environment team, surface hydrology monitoring regulatory programs.
- Oversee the install and calibration of water elevation monitoring equipment.
- Advanced proficiency in stream gauging equipment for in-stream flow measurements, including the use of Acoustic measuring devices (ADCP, FlowTracker or equivalents)
- Skilled in installation and programming of pressure sensors such as SDI-12 sensors for accurate level monitoring with setup and configuring of remote telemetry systems considered an asset.
- Experienced in processing and analyzing hydrological data from flow/level measurements conducted in the Arctic regions. Manage water management consultants in surface water and groundwater model development and report preparation;
- Overseeing and assist with the collection, compiling, and analyzing site water monitoring data including but not limited to lake elevations, river flows, pumping records, and water quality;
- Contributing to the compilation and review of internal and external environmental reporting requirements;
- This position is based at the Gahcho Kue Mine on 4x3 Schedule (Mon – Thurs), with the point of pickup as Yellowknife, NT.
- Qualifications
Formal qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, hydrology, hydrogeology, or equivalent;
- Post-graduate degree and relevant professional designation would be considered an asset;
- Five (5) years of water management experience, preferably in the environmental consulting or mining sectors;
- Proficiency in writing technical reports;
- Experience in environmental assessment, permitting and regulatory compliance in mining or related industries;
- Ability to simplify complex datasets and present them comprehensibly to relevant stakeholders;
- Experience with EHS MonitorPro, GoldSim, Power BI and other data management & modeling tools.
- Advanced skills with Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and familiarity with databases;
- Possess sound judgment, planning, problem solving and decision making abilities;
- Strong communication skills, both verbally and written, with the ability to write technical reports; and
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and productively.

- Preference will be given to Members of the Deninu Kué, Lutsel K’e Dene First Nation, North Slave Métis Alliance, Northwest Territory Métis Nation, Tlicho Government, or Yellowknives Dene First Nation, followed by non-indigenous residents of the Northwest Territories.
