We’re excited to share that we are hiring a Market Analysis Engineer for our Policy & Commercial Development team based out of our Calgary office.
Responsibilities
Prepare executive summaries, presentations, reports, and other analysis that includes gathering of external data, performing research, and consulting industry and internal subject matter experts, in the following areas
- Market fundamentals that influence transmission in Alberta such as, operational characteristics of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System, generation, load, and electricity prices, among others.
- Government policies, market design, regulations, ISO rules, and other inputs influencing the market and industry.
- System and financial information related to utilities in Alberta and utilities in other jurisdictions.
- New transmission, generation, and industrial developments in Alberta and other jurisdictions.
- Emerging technologies such as hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, electric vehicles, and energy storage.
- Provide inputs into AltaLink’s business processes (ten-year business plan, General Tariff Application, business strategy) and policy/regulatory initiatives.
- Support, and complete as required, system planning assessments including Optimal Transmission Planning, long term asset lifecycle planning, and operational analysis.
- Identify opportunities and lead continuous improvement activities including automation of tools.
- Collaborate with team members, peers, cross-functional subject matter experts, industry contacts and senior leadership on various initiatives.
- Demonstrate key behaviors and meet identified expectations outlined in our four cultural pillars – one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on Power Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with the Association of Engineers & Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or is eligible for immediate registration as a P.Eng with APEGA.
- Minimum of ten years of engineering experience.
- Minimum 3 years of power system engineering experience, preferably on high voltage transmission systems (138 kV, 240 kV, 500 kV), including minimum 3 years of industrial experience with utility companies.
- Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
- Technical knowledge and understanding of transmission system modeling, operation and planning.
- Documented experience with PTI’s (Power Technology Incorporated) PSSE program and other power system analysis tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC would be an asset.
- Analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to collect, summarize, review data, develop recommendations, and relay the narrative to stakeholders.
- Experience with collection and analysis of corporate data to develop actionable results that support stakeholder decision making.
- Experience with economic analysis and market research will be considered a plus.
- Familiar with the Alberta Interconnected Transmission System and Alberta industry structure.
- Strong verbal and written (reporting, graphical) communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of information requests simultaneously.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Power Point. Experience with the use of other data analysis tools are considered a plus.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer and stakeholder outcomes.
- Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
