Job Description: PURPOSE STATEMENT The Kitchen Helper supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of The Salvation Army. He/She will be actively engaged in supporting the cooks in the feeding program at the Halifax Centre of Hope. JOB SUMMARY: He/She is responsible to perform various cleaning, maintenance, preparation and stocking duties in the Kitchen and dining room area. He/She washed dishes, helps cooks prepare meal ingredients and clean kitchen. The kitchen helper’s duties often involve retrieving ingredients from the refrigerator, freezer, and stockroom, measuring ingredients as per the cook’s instructions, and removing leftovers from client’s plates, bowls and glasses before putting them through the dishwasher or washing by hand. He/She must also ensure that all work areas are properly sanitized. POSITION OBJECTIVES (MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES) To work and take pride in their work, while ensuring a safe healthy workplace. To see that all appliances and equipment are checked daily to ensure they are all operating correctly. To ensure that the kitchen and dining rooms are always kept clean and tidy. Wipe all dining room tables including staff lunchroom and counters. To assist cook in preparations for dinner and supper including assistance with the serving of both meals. To clear off dinner trays when returned and process them through dishwasher areas to be cleaned, washed and sanitized; in addition, all pots and pans are to be similarly treated. To sweep and wash kitchen floor regularly and such other times as may be required. To sterilize buckets in dish washing area at least twice per week. Wash the mop at least once per week in a javex solution after which it will be well wrung out and placed in a good position to dry. To assist the cook on duty by performing such duties as may be required and to assist him/her in the performance of his/her duties such as preparing meal ingredients for the cook, which includes washing, peeling, cutting and slicing ingredients. To clean and peel fruit and vegetables as required. Clear dining area and wash dishes after breaks. To ensure that all garbage and recycling is removed as soon as possible but not later than the end of the day. To assist in the sorting of all donations and incoming orders and to place in appropriate storage areas. To assist in the cleaning and organization of walk-in refrigerators or freezers including rotation of stock. To ensure that the staff office and bathroom is always kept clean and tidy. To dress and present themselves in a professional manner when it comes to personal hygiene and grooming. Attend staff meetings when required. Attend all kitchen staff meetings To support outside BBQ or luncheon for clients at least 3 times per year. Perform other duties a required; EDUCATION (Qualifications) High School diploma or GED. Have completed training in Crisis Intervention, First Aid Certificate, Team building, WHMIS training, Food Handler’s Course Able to take directions. Work independently. Proven experience helping in kitchen settings. A good knowledge of the Canada Food Guide Operation of a Dishwasher Must be able to lift 20 lbs. WORKING CONDITIONS The incumbent will on occasions work under the following disagreeable conditions: dealing with angry and abusive people, verbal abuse, and exposure to drugs and alcohol. Required to use and secure sharp instruments. Potential for minor burns and cuts Potential for slippery floors. Slip resistant footwear required. Uniform provided and required on the job. Requires standard Workplace Safety practices be always used. Exposure to washing and sanitizing chemicals Job requires significant periods of time standing and walking. CONDITIONS OF EMLOYMENT: Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work may be required. Ability to stand for extended periods of time. The ability to use kitchen equipment and appliances. Sound knowledge of food safety standards and procedures This is a Casual position Able to provide a Criminal Background Check screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. Normal hours of work are scheduled with the time of 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM 2 paid fifteen minutes coffee breaks and one-half hour unpaid lunch break. Normal location of work is at The Salvation Army Halifax Centre of Hope, 2044 Gottingen Street, Halifax, NS. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $17.11 to $21.38 with a maximum of $25.66. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
