- The FX Supervisor is responsible for the artistic vision, technical rigor, and overall performance of their department on a given project. They ensure the consistency of visual effects (smoke, fire, particles, destructions, fluids, abstract effects), ensuring their seamless integration into the CG pipeline. A committed leader, they guide FX artists, support VFX supervision, collaborate with CG, comp, and production teams, and participate in strategic project planning. In parallel, in collaboration with the Head of FX Department, they actively contribute to pipeline development, method optimization, and knowledge transfer.
Key Responsibilities
- Creative Quality
- Translate the artistic vision of the project into concrete directives for FX artists.
- Participate in dailies and guide the team in executing shots with high creative value.
- Validate delivered effects based on the client's visual intentions and shot constraints.
- Collaborate with VFX and CG supervisors to ensure consistent aesthetic continuity.
- Intervene personally on the most complex shots if necessary.
- Technical Quality
- Define the technical standards to be met for all delivered effects.
- Propose or validate the tools, templates, or methods to be used for the show.
- Document project best practices, support artists in case of technical blocking.
- Identify recurring problems and collaborate with the pipeline team to resolve them.
- Ensure the optimization of caches, workfiles, and setups produced by the team.
- Leadership & Communication
- Supervise, motivate, and support FX artists with rigor and kindness.
- Lead FX turnovers, technical meetings, and follow-up sessions with clarity.
- Delegate shots strategically, according to the artists' level and specialty.
- Maintain a healthy, respectful, and conducive work environment for collective performance.
- Report critical issues to supervision or the department without delay.
- In close collaboration with the Head of FX Department, participate in the improvement of the FX department with experience gained through projects.
- Project Management
- Evaluate workload with production, anticipate staffing needs.
- Participate in FX casting and recommend the right profiles based on the shots to be delivered.
- Assist in defining time estimates and prioritizing sequences.
- Closely monitor project progress, ensuring deliverables are met on time.
- Support production in strategic submissions or validations if required.
- Workflow Strategies
- Design FX methodologies adapted to the project's style, budget, and schedule.
- Detect inefficiencies in processes and recommend adjustments.
- Participate in the development or implementation of innovative tools for the team.
- Contribute to the overall pipeline consistency between FX, CG, and comp departments.
- Share project learnings in post-mortem and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in visual effects in a VFX environment.
- Confirmed experience in team supervision or project management.
- Advanced proficiency in Houdini (Pyro, Flip, RBD, Vellum, SOPs).
- Functional knowledge of Nuke, Arnold, Karma, and Python scripting.
- Good command of USD and Solaris.
- Good command of Flow Production Tracking and a keen understanding of the VFX pipeline.
- Strong artistic and technical skills, ability to arbitrate quickly.
- Positive leadership, strategic mind, composure, and clarity in communication.
- Assets: FX tool development, participation in pipeline innovation initiatives, client presentations.
- Additional Information
- Proven experience as a FX supervisor.
- Must be based in Montreal.
- Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or open work permit is required.
- Availability to work on-site at the studio 3 days a week.
