Unposting Date: 2025-08-21 11:59 PM Your role: We are looking for a mission-driven person to lead the team at CBC Thunder Bay as Executive Producer for News and Current Affairs. You love local current affairs and breaking news. You want to drive the news agenda in Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario. You’re comfortable telling stories on multiple platforms and you know the nuances that make a story sing on each medium. You are a creative thinker who is adept at setting up your team to keep up with our changing audience’s evolving needs and expectations. You think strategically: you can set direction for the station and develop mechanisms to ensure we are delivering on our mission. You can delegate effectively but also be hand-on and work with team members when needed. You understand that daily news can be a flat-out sprint to deadline, with a myriad of complex decisions to make along the way. You know how to balance out the daily demands with longer-term projects. You champion team success and find creative solutions when issues arise. The people who work on your teams know what you expect of them. You are an inclusive leader, capable of managing people and making space for difficult conversations that can lead to a better understanding of issues affecting people in Thunder Bay and stronger relationships with the communities we serve. You work in partnership with the executive producer of CBC Sudbury to harness the collective strengths of both the Thunder Bay and Sudbury teams and find creative and meaningful ways to serve the greater northern Ontario audience. Key Tasks: Oversee all journalism at CBC Thunder Bay Lead journalistic staff in strengthening our connections with communities Cultivate relationships with new audiences and community stakeholders, and respond to audience concerns Diversify the range of voices, opinions and creative storytelling the audience sees and hears on CBC Thunder Bay Strengthen our content through critical thinking and creative vision Coordinate, program and execute special programming Lead staff through a continuously changing media environment with innovation and strategic planning Responsible for resource allocation including budget Make daily staffing and scheduling decisions Direct team through challenging journalistic situations, including issues that have legal implications. Oversee daily operation and facility needs at CBC Thunder Bay, including fleet management Help employees to develop through mentoring, ongoing feedback, performance management and providing opportunities for growth Perform all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification We are looking for a candidate with the following: A university degree or equivalent Ten (10) years’ experience which must involve work in journalism and experience leading program or project teams Strong and demonstrated understanding of traditional and emerging platforms Superior writing, editorial, vetting and production skills. Interest in cross-platform media production A strong team leader with the ability to inspire others Can interpret and adapt to audience trends and data Thorough knowledge of CBC’s journalistic standards and practices and their applications in a wide variety of contexts Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long term strategic planning Understanding of Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario’s political and cultural landscape Demonstrated skills in the areas of conflict resolution, mentoring, talent recognition and development A valid driver's licence A commitment to reflecting community and diversity Ability to work flexible hours as required, including early morning and evening shifts, and weekends. Ability to work within tight timelines, often in unexpected overtime situations Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
