Job Description: POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Driver provides pick up and delivery services to donors, clients and customers by exercising safe and careful driving and material handling procedures. ACCOUNTABILITIES: The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class. Ensures the safe and careful handling of all deliveries, donations, kettle and other funds while protecting property, including donations and vehicles. Takes responsibility for daily and overall safety, maintenance, operation of vehicle, and records of such. Provides customers and donors with courteous and diplomatic service. Maintains knowledge of legislative and company policies such as Health and Safety Regulations, provincial and municipal highway traffic acts. Performs circle checks of trucks and maintains truck logs. Loads and unloads pallets, boxes and totes at the warehouse, stores, and other pick up and drop off locations, manually and with the use of pallet jacks. Ensures the loads are wrapped to ensure safe transportation, loading and unloading. Records data of incoming and outgoing loads, using manual and electronic devices. Cleans bins and garbage, general cleaning of shipping area, including sweeping and mopping when necessary. Assists/directs farmers with farm waste. Assists/directs volunteers to ensure tasks are completed to food safety standards. Performs other duties as assigned. CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Governance Boards and Councils: None Internal: Staff, management, volunteers, clients External: Donors, community MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY: Reports directly to the Community Ministries Supervisor Direct reports: none The incumbent is responsible for his/her own time and effort only. They may demonstrate work methods to new employees, volunteers and/or students. FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Considerable material responsibilities – safe material handling and picking up/delivering donations. Uses or maintains organization assets in accordance with established guidelines. Does not process any financial transactions with no budget responsibilities. WORKING CONDITIONS: The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a truck and warehouse. This a part time positions, 2 days a week (Sunday and Monday), flexibility is required on the schedule to meet operational needs. The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions, garbage, odours, dirty environment, truck fumes, excessive noise, extreme temperature changes, work schedule may impact life (weeknights and weekends). The incumbent is required to travel more than 70% of the time. The work requires frequent amount of standing, walking, bending, repetitive lifting, and the ability to lift up to 39 pounds with no assistance from others. The incumbent works on call for emergencies only. The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illnesses due to, moving objects, driving in hazardous conditions, risk of back injuries (throwing out back), traffic accident injuries, other potentially dangerous situations. The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules), universal precautions, wear Hi Vis vest, wear steel toed safety shoes, wear gloves, use back brace. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS: Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Alternative combination of education and Experience may be considered. Education, Qualifications and Certifications: The successful job applicant will have completed High School, plus specialized courses of up to six months. An alternate level of education and experience may be acceptable. Valid BC class 5 (or provincial equivalent) license with appropriate certification. Original copy of a current Driver’s Abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. (proof of clean driving record. Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening. Strong navigation skills. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements: The incumbent must have one year but less than three years of prior related experience. Skills and Capabilities: The performance of the job requires frequently sitting for long periods of time, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling, lifting and kneeling. The incumbent must be able to lift 50 pounds. The performance of the job requires frequent safety awareness, concentration when driving and maneuvering donations. Demonstrated safe driving practices. Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility. Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Professional, service-oriented approach internally and externally. Exceptional organizational, prioritizing and time management skills. Self-motivated and disciplined self-starter. Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution. Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
