  • The Finance team is responsible for managing the Ivey Business School’s financial resources and ensuring fiscal responsibility. This includes budgeting, financial reporting and analysis, working capital management, and compliance. The Finance team plays a central role in the academic mission of the school by ensuring sound financial management, effective resource allocation and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Position Overview

  • Reporting to Chief Financial Officer, the Director, Finance provides both operational and programmatic support to senior leadership team in achieving Ivey’s strategic and financial goals.  The Director, Finance oversees all finance functions for Ivey Business School. This position oversees the financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes to enable the school to effectively plan, monitor, and respond to business risks and opportunities. Ensures monthly and annual financial statements accurately represent the financial position of school and develops business processes, systems, and tools to increase operational efficiency across the school. The Director of Finance also oversees all accounting activities/requests from Western finance as it relates to the financial statement audit, A/P processing, AR collection, and tax compliance. 

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Accounting and Reporting

  • * Manage accounting staff and oversee all finance functions for Ivey Business School a
  • * Develop and maintain financial accounting systems for cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit control, payroll, and petty cash.
  • * Responsible for the month-end and year-end closing process.
  • * Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the users and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • * Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions.
  • * Review monthly results and implement monthly variance reporting.
  • * Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures.
  • * Develop, implement, and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • * Coordinate the provision of information for the annual financial audit and liaise with the external auditors as necessary.
  • * Responsible for ensuring a successful annual financial audit; maintain relations with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations.
  • * Develop and implement policies and procedures for review with CFO to ensure that personnel and financial information is secure and stored in compliance with current legislation.
  • * Assist the CFO with financial reporting as required for Board meetings, Advisory Board, and Annual General Meetings.
  • * Provide informative financial analysis to the CFO to provide financial guidance to the Dean and the Executive Committee of the School.
  • * Interpret and ensure compliance with University financial policies and procedures, collective agreements, legislation, and external guidelines on issues relating finance, accounting, taxation, human resources, and payroll.
  • * Develop business processes, systems, and tools to increase operational efficiency.
  • * Develop and maintain sufficient internal financial controls and accounting procedures to safeguard the financial assets of the school and related companies.
  • 2. Payroll and Administration
  • * Oversee all payroll functions to ensure employees are paid in a timely and accurate manner, statutory deductions and tax filings are accurate and timely.
  • * Ensure adherence to payroll legislations and approve payroll related documents.  

3. Budget and Forecast

  • * Plan, coordinate, and execute the annual budget process, ensuring compliance with all budgetary requirements.  
  • * Establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation and support the preparation of multi-year financial plans with department leaders that are realistic and reflective of department’s strategic plan and financial goals for the school.  
  • * Review financial reports to identify forecast and budget variances and make recommendations based on departmental goals and objectives.
  • * Provide training and guidance to department leaders with financial and budget responsibility.
  • * Responsible for Ivey Business School annual budget submission to Western IPB.
  • Qualifications: 
  • Education & Experience
  • * Certified Professional Accounting Designation required.   
  • * A university degree preferably in a related discipline.
  • * A minimum of five to ten years of progressive finance experience in leadership roles.
  • Skills & Abilities
  • * Strong business acumen with the ability to assess complex situations from a business and not for profit perspective.
  • * Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to manage in a complex environment using sound judgement to balance multiple stakeholder positions.
  • * Proven track record of exceptional leadership including coaching, influencing and mentorship.
  • * Demonstrated ability to lead and support organizational change.
  • * Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills and the proven ability to plan, develop and execute creative approaches to complex financial issues.
  • * Experience in policy and procedure development, implementation and training.
  • * Financial modeling experience required.
  • * Intermediate Excel skills (expertise with intermediate formulas such as Vlookup, pivot tables, charts, data tables).
  • * Detailed knowledge of financial and accounting principles including Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (Generally Acceptable Accounting Principles) and Canadian Generally Accepted Auditing Standards, including an understanding of internal control requirements.
  • * Ability to present financial data using detailed reports and charts to audiences without a financial background.
  • * Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to address the information needs of internal and on occasion, external stakeholder groups.
  • * Professionalism and diplomacy; sensitivity in working with confidential information.
  • * Service department approach to information requests from internal/external stakeholders.
  • * Experience in month-end and year-end close processes.
  • * Experience in an organization with multiple business units and multi-currency accounting systems.
  • * General knowledge of payroll legislation (EI, CPP, Income Tax, EHT, WSIB, etc.)Employment Standards Act, collective agreements (unionized environment), PCI Compliance, Privacy and Tax legislation.
