Job Summary The Digital Media Specialist manages the technological development of innovative media projects across diverse platforms and technologies. This role combines expertise in media production, creative technology, and collaborative initiatives. The incumbent provides technical support to the Bachelor of Media Studies (BMS) program, assisting students, faculty, and staff in producing and presenting public facing digital media projects for research, knowledge exchange and community-engaged purposes. Key responsibilities include procuring and maintaining specialized media equipment, services and facilities, creating multimedia assets, and web content. The role also involves training users in media technologies, leading workshops, and developing resources to promote effective and responsible use of multimedia tools. The Digital Media Specialist also supports the broader Faculty of Arts through Arts ISIT, extending their expertise to enhance faculty-wide digital media and educational initiatives. Organizational Status Reports to the Arts ISIT Senior Manager, Learning Centre, with a dotted line to BMS Chair. Works closely with BMS instructors, faculty, students, and administrative staff. This position coordinates with other Arts ISIT staff and could collaborate with other technical staff other units on campus, such as ARC, EML, HIVE, to keep current emerging technological developments and media needs of the University Community and as applied in industry. Work Performed - Provides consultation and supports for collaborative faculty, student, community partner research work in studio, lab, public-facing and field settings. - Participates in the planning and execution of public-facing media projects, forums, applications, exhibitions, and showcases, including technical setup and event support. - Facilitates the training and use of a wide range of media equipment use, including but not limited to digital cameras, audio recorders, speakers, lighting, 3D and flatbed scanners, projectors, touch capable monitors, XR headsets and sensors. - Provides technical support and troubleshooting for media production hardware and software use, including installation, configuration, and maintenance. This may/can include: - Building and maintaining frontend interfaces using JavaScript, React, and other frameworks; manage backend systems for digital asset storage, access, and archiving. - Providing technical support for web, interactive media, and data visualization projects using frameworks and platforms such as JavaScript, React, Touch Designer and XR tools while helping to maintain accessible and functional digital platforms. - Supporting the creation and editing of audio, video, photographic, effects and/or 3D content using industry-standard tools including DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Suite, Nuke, Unity, Blender and Multimodal Generative workflows, while maintaining high production standards. - Designing, implementing and managing real-time physical interactive experiences for live performances using Touch Designer to integrate video, sound, and 3D data pipelines; develop XR environments for immersive experiences. - Optimizing cloud-based solutions for data visualization workflows using platforms like Tableau. - Alongside teaching faculty, researchers, community partners and students, contributes to the avigation and development and application of media technologies in their research, creative and academic projects that support creation of engaging, media-rich research outputs. - Directs collaborative project workflows of various research projects with digital outputs using project management tools and methods (e.g. Agile, Miro and Tableau) to plan and develop project timelines, task delegation, and content management strategies for the BMS CAPSTONE course. - Management of digital media operations of Bachelor of Media Studies program, researches and coordinates the arrangements and lending/ booking of media equipment and studio spaces using a reservation system, ensuring resources are available and in optimal working condition. - Develops and manages budgets, reconciling issues that could affect the cost, quality and/or timing of research projects. - Plans and manages system design, and facility utilization; researches and recommends new and sustainable technologies to support evolving program needs. - Researches and maintains relevancy with software and hardware choices, plans for ethical, sustainable and accessible digital development, use and execution decisions. - Develops and maintains up-to-date documentation, user guides, and training materials for equipment and software. - Stays current with professional trends and maintains awareness of field and industry developments. - Ensures compliance and advises students and faculty with safety protocols, copyright, and privacy standards in all technical operations. - Supports integration and collaboration with other technical teams (e.g., EML, HIVE, ARC) and community/industry partners for joint effort and resource sharing. - Enables and manages collaborative production spaces for faculty, students and community partners to develop and present work in. - Assists with the evaluation of teaching and learning strategies for project-based group learning and technical competency development. - May assist in training, scheduling, and distributing work of student staff, casuals, or temporary workers. - Performs other related duties as required to support the technical and creative objectives of the BMS program, as well as the Faculty of Arts during BMS down times. Consequence of Error/Judgement Must exercise a high degree of judgment, initiative, and tact in dealing with students, faculty, and sensitive data. Errors in technical support, equipment handling, or media showcases could disrupt course delivery, impact student learning outcomes, and result in unnecessary costs or reputational risk to the program. Supervision Received Works under the general direction of Arts ISIT Senior Manager, Learning Centre in consultation with the BMS Program Chair and relevant teaching faculty members. Work is reviewed for effectiveness, accuracy, and achievement of program objectives. Supervision Given May provide technical guidance, training, and supervision to student staff, casuals, and temporary workers engaged in media production support. Minimum Qualifications Two year diploma in multimedia and broadcast production. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. - Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own. - Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Preferred Qualifications - Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., digital media, computer science, media production). - Demonstrated technical proficiency with media production equipment and software. - Experience in front end web and application development and communicating with back-end frameworks and databases and servers. - Familiarity with servers, databases and websites for data-processing and storing and archiving media projects. - Strong troubleshooting skills for both hardware and software in Mac and Windows environments. - Excellent organizational, communication, and interaction service skills. - Familiarity with safety, copyright, and privacy practices in media production. - Knowledge of transdisciplinary media practices and community engaged media work. - Ability to explain technical concepts to users of varying skill levels in clear, accessible language. - Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. - Experience working in a post-secondary or educational setting is an asset - Commitment to supporting a diverse, inclusive, and innovative learning environment.
