- POSITION SUMMARY:
- The Controller is accountable to develop and maintain effective and efficient financial accounting processes, procedures, and controls on behalf of the organization and to lead a team to perform all facets of the end-to-end accounting cycle. Specifically, this role manages all processes associated with financial forecasting, budgeting, accounting of revenues and expenditures, financial analysis and reporting, segregation of duties and internal controls, financial compliance, and control.
- PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Financial Accounting –
- * Ensures all financial systems, policies, processes, and controls are established and comply with accounting and audit standards and practices; keeps current on changes to standards and practices.
- * Responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of month end financial statements. Reviews month end reconciliations and accounting entries.
- * Monitors, analyzes, and reports on the financial performance of the organization on a continuous basis.
- * Prepares financial statements and reports on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis; research variances and provides explanations as required.
- * Prepares andor oversees preparation of reports to Board of Directors, Audit & Risk Committee and regulatory agencies.
- * Forecasts and prepares the annual and three-year operating and capital budget. Responsible for the monitoring and reporting of actual to budget performance and preparing financial results.
- * Oversees the cash flow process to ensure funds are available and financial requirements are met.
- * Prepares all necessary documents and information (e.g., year end and working papers) for audit purposes; works with external auditors; prepares audited financial statements.
- * In accordance with accounting and industry legislation and regulatory requirements, manages the development, implementation and communication of sound accounting processes and practices; keeps current on changes to regulatory reporting and ensures regulatory reporting is completed as required.
- Financial Accounting (continued) –
- * Works with members of the senior management team to identify and evaluate a broad range of business opportunities, including acquisitions, strategic partnerships, and potential initiatives. Uses current techniques for financial modeling and develops business cases to accurately assess the strategic and financial benefits and risks. Makes recommendations to the CEO, CFO, and the senior management team, acting as an advocate and advisor for the merits and risks of proposals.
- * Assists with providing oversight and input into the supply chain management process related to fleet, facilities, and product expenditures; ensures pricing is competitive and the tender process is utilized as required.
- * Safeguards the organization from any financial risk by overseeing all financial procedures, segregation of duties, controls, budgets, and performance outcomes; ensures departmental processes and programs operate securely and efficiently, including technology-based applications.
- * Identifies and establishes process improvement opportunities for the accounting department, including the application of technology to achieve efficiencies.
- Team Leadership –
- * Hires and develops team members in area of responsibility; directs the work function of employees in the Finance Department; oversees their work/results and provides appropriate feedback.
- * Identifies and provides initial and on-going training / learning as required; works to develop capabilities, teamwork and a strong customer / member engagement and service orientation in accordance with job requirements.
- * Monitors and manages team member performance on a regular basis; ensures systems and processes are followed; develops plans, provides feedback, and coaches team members to enhance performance outcomes; listens to issues or concerns of team members and provides coaching, support, or assistance as appropriate.
- * Handles employee relations issues in conjunction with Human Resources; applies disciplinary procedures if required.
- * Demonstrates a commitment to health and safety through actions (active promotion and participation).
- * As an active participant of the management team, is a role model who supports a positive organizational culture and is focused on building strong employee teams in a highly competitive environment.
- * Consistently communicates with all team members to keep them well-informed; shares organizational goals, objectives, and results with team members as appropriate.
- Additional Accountabilities -
- * Keeps current on emerging business issues; identifies risk and takes action as appropriate.
- * Responsible for the day-to-day financial management of the Children’s Fund Charity.
- * Provides input into the collective bargaining process; calculates impact of changes to compensation and benefits.
- * Represents Access Communications and participates in fundraising dinners, events, and functions.
- * Performs and/or leads special projects as necessary.
- * Attends business / leadership meetings and provides agendas, documents, regular and ad hoc reports in advance of meetings as required.
- * Responsible for the development, monitoring, and reporting of key business indicators and performance measures.
- * Adheres to corporate policies and procedures; personally, demonstrates professionalism and the organization’s values and establishes a culture based on these foundational values.
- QUALIFICATIONS:
- * An undergraduate degree in Finance, Business Administration or Commerce with a focus on Accounting.
- * A CPA designation is necessary, and individual an active member of CPA Saskatchewan.
- * 5 - 7 years of senior progressive and successful business and financial accounting experience.
- * Financial management and control within the non-profit sector is an asset.
- * Financial & Technical Expertise – Strong knowledge of accounting standards, financial reporting, and internal controls; ensures accuracy, compliance, and audit readiness.
- * Financial Planning, Analysis & Modeling – Builds budgets, forecasts, and financial models (including pricing); analyzes performance, margins, and profitability to support decisions.
