- Nature & Scope
- 2nd Cooks provide support to the 1st Cooks and Food Services Manager with completing the day-to-day kitchen tasks. 2nd Cooks work in a high‑volume camp kitchen serving up to 450 guests daily. Cooks prepare, cook, serve, and clean up after meals, while maintaining an organized and safe kitchen.
Camp Elphinstone
- YMCA Camp Elphinstone, located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, is just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Vancouver. Nestled on 144 acres of temperate rainforest along the shores of Howe Sound, the camp offers a variety of programs for youth ages 5-17 during July and August. These include one- and two-week overnight camps, Leadership Development programs, multi-day paddling and hiking trips, and day camps. From September to June, Camp Elphinstone functions as an Outdoor Education, Event, and Retreat Centre, hosting schools, conferences, weddings, and other special interest groups. Annually, the camp serves over 10,000 participants.
- YMCA Camp Elphinstone can accommodate and dine up to 472 campers or guests. During July and August, the camp employs around 140 staff and volunteers, while the spring and fall Outdoor Education seasons see a team of 20-50 members. In the winter season, a smaller core team of 10 staff members is maintained. Successful staff at Camp Elphinstone are self-motivated individuals dedicated to helping children and youth thrive in an outdoor camp setting, and they are committed to providing 5-star customer service to all client groups.
Major Responsibilities- in this position, you will
- * Assist 1st cook in day-to-day food preparation, cooking, execution and service of food at a high volume
- * Understand the importance of communicating kitchen stock and inventory to 1st cooks and Food Services Manager
- * Serve and assist in communicating to participants (adults and children) at meal times to ensure all goes smoothly
- * Ensuring a high level of quality, cleanliness, and food safe handling is met in all aspects of work
- * Providing friendly, professional customer service to participants and staff inside and out of the kitchen
- * Ensure the safety of all participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants and staff
- * Ensure FoodSafe standards are followed at all times
- * Making sure weekly and daily cleaning tasks and checklists are completed
- * Provide support after meals by washing dishes, cleaning workstations, and packing and storing food safely and efficiently
- * Willingness to learn new skills in a fast pace environment
- * Other duties as assigned by Food Services Director or 1st cooks as needed
Qualification-you bring
- * Food Safe level 1
- * Previous experience in the food service industry preferably a camp environment or equivalent is an asset
- * Knowledge of dietary restrictions and allergies
- * Ability to stand for a long period of time and lift up to 50 pounds
- * Ability to work with minimal supervision
- * Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C is an asset
- * WHIMIS Certification is an asset
- * Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
- * Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
